Role of Social Relations and Developing the Skills of Blind Women
QSCCB had organized on Wednesday 22/4/2009 a workshop titled: "Role of Social Relations and Developing the Skills of Blind and Visual Impaired Women" by Dr. Awatif Al-Enazy, Member of Social and Cultural Committee and Treasurer of Kuwait Blind association, and the Rapporteur of Women Committee of the Arab Blind Federation.
The workshop was attended by many authorities such as Musical Arts Center, Ministry of Education, Qatar University, Qatar Cultural and Social Center for Deaf, Al-Jassra Forum, and Family Consulting Center. Dr. Awatif discussed the psychology of blind people, the economic problems they face, and the additional expenditures caused by the visual disability.
Then she discussed the behavior of visually impaired children and the Tics they might suffer from and its causes. She explained that those Tics may carry no significance in itself but it might disturb some other important processes in the blind's life such as reading and movements. Dr. Awatif pointed out that approaches towards disabled people, including blind, are negative and unrealistic. They focus on what one cannot do rather than what he/she can.
Besides, the reactions of parents, authorities, peers, and others often involve prototype perceptions that picturize a blind person as someone who depends on others. She remarked that a blind child needs more care than what a sighted child needs. She stressed the necessity of providing his/her psychological needs.
The workshop ended on Thursday 23/4/2009 and participants received their certificates.
