Mr. Hassan Ibrahim Al-Kuwari

Mr. Hassan was born in 1947. He is a married with one son. He has a sight disability since birth.

He is the Chairman of QSCCB, and a member in the World Blind Union, Asian Blind Union and People with Special Needs Committee.

"I'm grateful to Allah, and thankful to my father for helping me to defeat this disability as my father insisted in teaching me in private schools and had always encouraged me." Said Mr. Hassan. "At first, I was visually impaired and I managed to study in normal schools for 3 years during which I gathered maps and architectural drawings as my favorite hobby. Anyway, I couldn't continue any more as I started to lose more of my eyesight."

"My treatment journey began in 1961 from UK. I went to many other countries last of which was Russia. I've been diagnosed with Optic Nerve Atrophy which is hard to treat. After that I decided to work with my father in his trade until I got a job as an operator in the Electricity Department because it was a very suitable job for blinds at that time."

"Even after I got my first job, I wanted to continue my study. In 1965, I got a scholarship from the Ministry of Education to study in a private institution in Kuwait where I finished my preparatory school. Then I got another scholarship to Egypt to study in the Model Centre for the Blind Care & Guidance (Al-Noor Castle) for 3 years. I obtained a trainer certificate to train blind and sighted operators. Those were my best memories; I finally obtained the certificate I've always dreamed of." "In 1971, I was assigned in the Vocational Training & Development Department as a Senior Trainer. I'm still working there in training staff and rehabilitating them to work in the different authorities of the State."

As for his main achievements, Mr. Hassan said: "Ever since 1971, I've always dreamed of establishing an association for the blind here in Qatar. I worked hard and wrote to the different authorities that could help in making this dream come true. Finally I cooperated with the General Authority for Youth to establish QSCCB. I also contributed in training blind on how to operate the telephone switcheboards and helped in getting them jobs. This is can be widely seen in the different ministries of the State."

"My hobbies which are gathering maps and architectural drawings, as I previously mentioned, helped me tremendously in designing my own house to fit my condition as a blind person. I asked the house designer to draw the maps based on my own thoughts and I depended on Braille. The result was extremely successful.

I like to go camping and helping others in cooking and everything else. I'm also very keen to do home plumping and fix electrical problems. That’s how I spend my spare time to prove to the whole world that we have so much to contribute to our society.

My advice to the parents is to make sure that their disabled children receive good education and right guidance in life to enable them to be effective members in the society. As for the society and its members, they must reach out to people with disabilities to help them merge in the society. Thanks to God Almighty, and thanks to every person working for the benefit of people with disabilities."
